Flying News

  • General Aviation Safety has been added to the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB) “Most Wanted List” as an area for improvement. Each year, hundreds of people (450 in 2010) are killed in GA accidents, and thousands more are injured. What's distressing is that the causes of GA accidents are almost always a repeat of the circumstances of previous accidents. Learn more.

  • Review the top 10 causes for GA fatal accidents as identified from NTSB accident-report data.

  • The FAA is taking a look at the current general aviation airport system in the U.S. to better describe and explain the many roles and functions these airports serve in their respective communities. The review, which began last fall, is focusing on infrastructure needs, based on the roles and functions of the airports. Learn more.

Report on Heat Dangers

From the IFR pilot holding for a clearance, to the air show pilot waiting to perform, or to the glider pilot working a hot summer thermal, each is at risk from the heat and more importantly, from the danger of not drinking enough water.

Heat related problems can be as deadly to a pilot as the lack of oxygen. We seldom discuss heat problems and their effects on the ability of a pilot to control an aircraft in flight. Learn more.

2011 Airshow Poll Results

We recently conducted a poll on whether or not you'll attend an airshow this year. Of those that responded, 37% said "YES", while 31% said "NO" and 31% were "NOT SURE".

Of those that plan on attending an airshow this year, 28% will attend one, 25% will attend two or three, and 24% plan on attending more than three.

Of the reasons cited for attending an airshow, 17% plan to watch the performances, 17% plan to browse the aircraft and flying-related items, 16% plan on shopping flying-related services (insurance, financing, real estate) and 16% plan on buying an aircraft.

Thanks to those of you who participated. Take IFA's new poll.

Regulations for Border-Crossing Aircraft

General aviation aircraft flying across a border into or out of the U.S. have to meet security requirements under regulations developed by the Department of Homeland Security. They call for submitting passenger manifests and other information at least 60 minutes prior to takeoff to or from a foreign port or place. This final rule became effective on December 18, 2008, and private aircraft pilots began complying with the requirements of this final rule on May 18, 2009. Learn more.
